PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Workshops, Trainings, Experiential Learning

JTC Experiences is available to create custom workshops and trainings focused on civil and human rights history. Through our experiential learning model, we help bring history to life in ways that inspire deeper understanding, meaningful reflection, and new possibilities for action.
“I learned about the changing demographics of Harlem and the impact of gentrification. I saw religious sites important to the histories of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X, and considered the role of religion and community in their approaches to civil rights. These topics will enhance my discussions of the civil rights movement and help me to make these issues more relevant for my students.”
Our workshops have included two-day experiences that combine classroom learning with immersive history-based walking tours, allowing participants to engage with history in both thoughtful and memorable ways. Past programs have explored topics such as Civil Rights History in Harlem, the Harlem Renaissance, Labor History in New York, and the Immigration Experience.

We are especially eager to share this model with teachers, educators, and professionals who are looking for dynamic learning opportunities that can spark inspiration and translate into new ideas for students, communities, and organizations.
"While I learned a tremendous amount of history in Harlem, I really reconnected with the art of storytelling and how valuable experiences, visiting historical spaces, learning and hearing from people about events and cultures truly is. I will take what excited me today and get our students to tap into their families history and culture, to learn from their own roots and give them the platform to share with their peers. At times, hearing from a peer or a family member, brings deeper connections to the learning.”
“The nature of the course was immersive. We looked at historical documents, drawings, and pictures. We listened to music, read stories, articles, and poems related to Harlem and participated in deep conversations. We walked the streets and met with key figures of the neighborhood to learn about the civil rights movement and changing populations of Harlem.”
“This course enhances my professional growth as a learner in many ways. The most influential, perhaps, was taking me through these historic locations with stories to amplify their importance. I have rarely been to historic spaces and felt such a connection as I did during this course. Meeting active community members who were alive through such historical events, and interacting with such influential historical figures, was moving. This allowed me as a learner to fully immerse myself in the lessons. Receiving information from authentic stakeholders made the experience that much more valuable, and I plan on utilizing these resources when I apply this newfound knowledge to my lessons.”
